Message from Staff – Liz Horn
I was reading an article over the holidays about happiness. The article was discussing the path towards true happiness. It was interesting to see that research is showing that what I consider to be Christian Teachings is proving to be the path to happiness.
The article spoke about how we live in a society where acquiring things, becoming successful, and having the right house etc are marketed as providing the path to happiness (a small drive through Faringdon last night and I could see this type of advertising.). But it also spoke of how in this type of society the levels of depression are extremely high.
Research is apparently now showing that extending kindness is the most lasting way to experience happiness. To me this is in-line with how God asks us to live our lives – Love God with all your heart, soul and mind, and love others as you love yourself. When we look at the Bible’s definition of love the first two words are patient and kind. It is great to know that God desires happiness for us, and that research is showing that by valuing mannakitanga (extending love) just as God calls each of us to do, we will in fact find the happiness that as humans we truly desire.
I encourage you to explore ways that you can be kind to those in our school community this term. I will also be encouraging the staff to find more and more ways that we can also extend kindness. It is such a simple concept, but in many ways so powerful. We have the ability to bring happiness to others and create happiness for ourselves simply through the small acts of kindness we can show each day.
