Message from Staff – Mandy Cleave

Kia Ora RCS Family, Recently I went on a course called ‘Lighting the Literacy Fire’ run by Jill Eggleton. If you have a child in the Junior Hub you will definitely know this name as she has written a lot of the reading books we use. I was reminded again how reading should be enjoyable for children – yes, we have goals to meet but the journey to reach these goals should emphasise the joy a good book can bring. It is up to all the adults in a child’s life to model this, so take the opportunity whenever you can to snuggle up with your child, grab their favourite book, and read it together.

Our school version of this is ‘Read and Feed’. This is when the children grab their morning tea, re-arrange the furniture and wait expectantly for the teacher to turn up with a good book. It is the highlight of many a child’s day (and teachers too!). Currently I am reading the 26 Story Treehouse, a story with crazy characters that have ridiculous adventures that really appeal to 6 and 7 year old children.  We laugh together, roll our eyes and secretly wish we lived in a tree house with pet sharks, an ice cream parlour and a marshmellow machine!

At RCS, when asked to choose a book to read by themselves, the children often choose one of the Beginner Bibles. It is wonderful to see their love of reading overflow into their passion to know more about God. Even if they can’t read all the words, they look at the pictures and know the stories are about a God who loves them more than they realise. Encouraging your child to read will light more than the literacy fire at RCS, it will also light their lives up with the love of God and help them to love those around them as well. And that is a fire worth lighting!

A Message From Piwakawaka Whanau

Hello Parents and Caregivers,
For Whanau groups our Piwakawaka (fantail) group have been researching about making our school a better place. The Piwakawaka group came up with having a quiet space inside so that we can read and chill out in. So if possible may you please donate a tent, some soft toys and some pillows for our quiet space.

From Delcia (Middle Hub) and the Piwakawaka Whanau Group

School Community Need
We have a need in our school community of a family who have their youngest child hospitalised at present with a chronic health condition – this is an ongoing hospital stay of 2 – 3 wks or more duration.  The Mum in the same family is also due to go in for surgery herself mid June.  If anyone is able to help by making a meal or two within a budget of $20 (which you will be reimbursed for) please contact Vickie on 027 296 2714 or email  Many thanks, RCS Pastoral Care Group
