Quick Notes:

Message from Staff – Mandy Cleave

This term at school, our main theme is ‘Whanaungatanga’, which can be defined as ‘relationship, kinship, sense of family connection – a relationship through shared experiences and working together which provides people with a sense of belonging’.
At our whole school assembly last week, I talked about this idea and suggested that whanaungatanga in our school was not just something that would instantly happen, but something that would need to be nurtured and will grow over time. We then pondered how we would get there, and reflected that an upcoming shared experience (our school’s official opening) could be an important part on our road to building whanaungatanga. Now being able to look back on this wonderful day, I really think it was!

Something very special that I found about last Friday (as well as the speeches and distinguished guests), was the wider sense of community, belonging and celebration that was shown by the many people who attended. RCS was supported by at least 5 other Christian Schools that were reperesented by senior staff, pupils, and kapa haka groups; staff from local primary schools attended, family of teaching staff attended, family of board members attended, not to mention the aunts, uncles, parents and grandparents and friends of our Rolleston Christian School students. What an amazing way to model to our children what it means to belong to and to suppport a community! I know they felt a special sense of belonging as they saw the opening of their school being celebrated by all those that had a part in seeing the original vision come to fruition.
In the Bible
Ecclesiastes 4:10 says, “If one falls down, his friend can help him up. But pity the man who falls and has no one to help him” (NIV). This speaks of community and the strength it brings. With so many friends, family and local community members supporting us, I am sure that for Rolleston Chrisian School, there will always be a friend to help us when we need it. My prayer is that as our whanaungatanga and sense of belonging grows, and out of the strength that creates, we will be able to be that helping hand to others too.

 What’s Happening

BOT Elections
Thank you to those people who have been nominated for the BOT. Voting papers need to be handed into the office in the official returning envelope by no later than Friday 8 May, 12pm.

Parent Facebook Group
The RCS Community Group have started a parent Facebook group. This is a parent initiative as a way to increase community and communication among the parent body. If you are on Facebook then please join this group and take an active role. You can use this as a way to share friendly reminders with each other about things that are going on at school, as well as a possible way to seek and give support to each other.

Our website designer is also in the process of developing a parent forum section for our school website. This will provide another forum for communication and support for parents.

Learning at Home Project

My name is Mackenzie, For my home learning I am going to donate my time to the Ellesmere food bank and help them pack food parcels. I would also like to bring a food parcel on behalf of the school. I’m going to leave a box out on the kitchen bench. So if each family could donate 1 item of non perishable food, that would be great. I will collect this on Friday the 8th of May. Thank you.

What’s Coming Up

Parent Information Evening – Literacy Focus
We are holding an information evening for parents, focussing on children’s learning and development in the area of literacy. This will be a chance for you to understand the approach we take at school when teaching reading and writing, for us to share ideas with you on the best ways you can help your children at home, and an opportunity for parents to share with each other about things that have worked for them. Date for your diary – Tuesday 12 May, 7pm.

  • Over the next couple of weeks we will be monitoring the number of people that are opening the newsletters and also following the clicks, in order to build a picture of communication in the school. A reminder that the links above lead you to important information on the school website.
