Message from Staff

Kia ora RCS community,

Welcome to Term 3 at RCS. I hope you had a refreshing break with your families and that your children are ready for a good term of learning. It is hard to believe we are into the second half of the school year already! I am looking forward to the term as we explore Love and Excellence, and how we treat one another. If you did not read the final newsletter last term please go back and look at it so you are aware of the focus this term.

When we first looked at having Excellence as one of our school values I felt slightly dubious, until I read an amazing blog post that discussed Christian Excellence as the process of growth for God’s glory.  My doubts had come from thinking of excellence as a form of competition or the anxiety that plagues many people in their strive for perfection. Thinking though of excellence as a constant process of growth and the desire to always do our best for God’s glory sat much better with how I view Christian values and also community and mental health.

Another thing that swayed me in my thinking was the Bible’s reference to Excellence being related to character.  There is a quote by Mother Theresa that says “We can do no great thing, just small things with great love.” I also believe that it is not the big or great things that define our character, but the small things that we choose to do or not do day by day that develop our character and therefore define it.

As a school we want to be a place where children learn to grow through the lessons they learn, the choices they make, and perhaps most importantly the mistakes they make. We want to see our children grow both in academics and in character.

So, this will be a term of growth. Growing in our pursuit of excellent character and love for others, as we learn to give glory to God through our lives.  I challenge you to grow with us through the discussion questions, the family challenges and through participating in our Home Learning Programme.

Many blessings,

Exploring the Values at Home

This week we are looking at the story of Moses taking the people out of Egypt, as we move from the story of Joseph and into our exploration of the Ten Commandments.  We will be discussing the similarities between God taking the Israelites out of slavery in Egypt and how Jesus can free us from unhelpful thoughts and behaviours.

In Circle Time we will be looking at our first Life Rule “I belong here. I do belong.” In school devotions we looked at the story of Ruth and Naomi, and how they had to know they belonged, even though they went into new environments.

What places does God have for you to belong?
What are some of the things we can do so we belong in a place?
What was God’s plan for Ruth’s life?
What are some of the plans that God has had in the life of your family?

Family challenge of the week:
Purchase the family pack from ‘My Life Rulz’ and get started with the family activities.

What’s Happening

School Donations – Reminder
As a Board we budget on receiving  $50 donation from each child.  These donations allow for greater flexibility for us to purchase resources and hire personnel that enhance teaching and learning. The donation is also tax deductible – meaning you can claim one third of the amount back.  We would appreciate it if all those that are able could please give this donation.

Informative morning teas
Come along to enjoy a cup of tea and cookie, and learn about ways to get involved at school this term.

Assemblies this term – CHANGE OF TIME
We have made the decision to change our assembly time.  There will now just be the one Devotional Assembly on a Monday morning at 9am. School certificates will be given out at this time too now.  There will be a full school Learning Celebration at the end of the term for each hub to share their learning. We invite all parents to join us each week to share in this special time.

Eating Times @ RCS
This term the children will have three opportunities to eat during the day. It would be helpful if you could pack your child’s lunch box so they are aware of the types of food they should eat at each point in the day. The first snack should be either fruit, vegetables or nuts. This snack is eaten during ‘Feed’n’Read’.  The second snack should be something reasonably substantial like a healthy sandwich or more fruit or vegetables.  This snack is eaten straight after the children have their second break.  The last point in the day to eat is the lunch break. If your child takes a long time to eat please try to pack food that they are able to eat reasonably quickly, as it is important that the children get enough time to run around and enjoy playing.

We ask that you consider carefully the types of food you send your children to school with, as some types of food are more conducive to good learning than others.

Explore Time – reduced time
Explore time will now finish at 9am.  The music will begin to play at 9am, and as you help your child to pack up please guide them towards their maths spaces as they will now begin the formal part of their day in their maths groups.

Start Time
A reminder that school starts at 8.55am.  If you are arriving at school after 9am please ensure you stop in at the office so we know you have arrived.

Health and Safety Check

Our Health and Safety Check with the students is around the way we move around the school.

I have reminded the children that we need to move around the school in different ways in order to keep ourselves and others safe.  It is important that inside we walk, while outside it is fine to run, skip and jump.  I have also reminded the children of the need to keep our learning spaces and the front of our school tidy and free of clutter, so we do not risk tripping over things.

Please encourage your child to make sensible choices when moving around the school grounds. I’m sure you have similar expectations in your homes too!

What’s Coming Up

The Library Bus will now be coming to school every fortnight.  This will be on all the even weeks of the term (next Monday). Please make sure your child has their card and library bag with them.

School Community Meeting – Bullying
As mentioned in the newsletter at the end of last term we are having a school community meeting to explore bullying and our response to it as a community.  It would be great if as many people as possible were available to attend.  The meeting will be held at 7pm on Tuesday 16 August.
