Message from Staff

Dear Parents,

It has been a lovely start to the year here at RCS. It has been fantastic to see the children back and ready to learn.  I have been particularly impressed with our five year olds who have made a fantastic start to their school life, demonstrating lovely manners and good learning behaviours.

These first few weeks are largely about setting up the routines and structures with the children that will allow them to make the most of their learning for the remainder of the year.  This means that some routines might be practised a number of times to ensure the children can do these quickly and independently.

Next Thursday we have our start of year Information Evening.  It is really helpful if everyone attends this meeting, so why we have two time slots to choose from.  We are just starting a new Strategic Plan for the school, following on from our set up phase.  We will be sharing more information about this at the information evening, along with important information that will help us to work together effectively.  I look forward to seeing you all there.

This year I will be having a ‘drop in hour’ on a Tuesday morning between 9am and 10am.  This is an opportunity to pop in and see me if you would like to ask any questions or query why we do things the way we do them.  We believe it is important for you to understand why we do things, hence we try to create space for you to do this.  Please remember that things that are specific to your child should be brought up directly with your child’s teacher.

We are looking forward to working with you this year, as we all work towards growing children to be everything God hopes them to be.

Many blessings,

A warm welcome to RCS!

Health Information & Permission Forms
These will be coming out this week. Please look out for these in your children’s bags. Kindly fill these out asap and return to the office. The form provides us with important information and a good time to update new information that we may not have. First 5 forms will get a small prize!

PE Shirts
This year we have introduced PE shirts to our uniform.  These are to be worn during PE sessions and for special events.  The Hubs have PE on the following days:

Te Kakano – Friday
Te Pihinga – Friday
Te Mahuri – Daily

Home Learning
The Home Learning Matrix will come out next week, so this week the focus should be on setting up your regular Home Learning routines.  Children should be doing the following daily:

Te Kakano
– Read the day’s reading book aloud
– Learn any sight words or spelling words that come home
– Practise counting forwards and backwards in fun ways eg. board games, songs etc

Te Pihinga
– Read to Self for 10-15 minutes
– Learn any spelling words that come home
– Practise basic facts in a fun way eg. games, or online.

Te Mahuri
– Read to Self for 15-20 minutes
– Learn any spelling words that come home
– Practise basic facts in a fun way eg. games, or online.

Thursday Afternoon Y3-8
This year the children in Years 3-8 will have the choice of three options on a Thursday afternoon. Te Kakakano (Years 0-2) will continue to do Kapa Haka as one group.

Option One is the Kapa Haka group – the group will be working towards two to three performance later in the year, one definitely being the Ellesmere Kapa Haka Festival, held in the evening.

Option Two is a Ukulele Group – the group will be working towards being involved in a festival called Strum, Strike and Blow, which is held at the Horncastle Arena and involves a number of schools.

Option Three is the choir.  The choir will be preparing for World Vision’s Kids for Kids Concert later in the year.  This is an evening performance.

Please discuss these options with your child and help them to make the best decision for their personal interests and talents.  Once they have made their decision this is what they are committed to for the year.

There are limited spaces in some groups so we will allocate this ‘first in first serve’. Please click the link below to make your choice.

This year swimming will be in second half of Term 3 instead of Term 1 from previous years. It will be a two week block done daily. More information will be given closer to the timeScholastic Orders
On Friday your children went home with an Issue 1 flyer.  Please place your orders online via My Lucky Book Club ordering system. This is a great way of supporting the school as all purchases earn 20% back in Scholastic Rewards for your school.

People must be nominated for a position prior to voting, so if you are interested in one of the positions or know someone you believe would be good for a role, please have these discussions prior to the meeting on Monday.
