Message from Staff

Greetings everyone,I trust everyone has managed to enjoy the beautiful weather over the weekend, and is feeling positive about our first full week at school.

A very big thank you to everyone that made the effort to come along to our information evening last week.  We feel very blessed by the many supportive families that are part of the RCS community and appreciate you taking time out of your busy schedules to build an understanding of what’s happening in 2017 and how we can work together to see good things for your children.

This term in Living Christianly we are focussing on The Beatitudes.  When considering what to teach, the staff discussed how we can find peace through our attitudes rather than our circumstances.  By exploring The Beatitudes we will examine the blessings we can receive from God when we have a humble attitude towards him.  This links in with our Health focus on emotions.  The intention with both of these areas for learning is that our students will begin to develop an awareness of their own emotions in different circumstances and start to develop strategies to harness these emotions and then respond to them in a peaceful, positive manner, thereby creating more peace in their own lives and the lives of those around them.

What a challenge to us as adults in the lives of these children!  What do we model to them in our reactions to frustration, anger, sadness, stress or fear?  Dealing with emotions is a fundamental aspect of experiencing peace and fulfilment in life, so I look forward to where our journey with them takes us this term!

A reminder that the PCG will be meeting for the first time in 2017 this evening. The PCG have had a huge impact in our school community and have some great plans for the year ahead, so I encourage you to get involved.

Many blessings,

Exploring the Values at Home

When someone close to you passes away, or you suffer a big disappointment it is OK to feel sad for a time. It’s OK for sadness to not be rushed. But God doesn’t want you to feel sad forever, after a time of sadness he wants to lift you into joy.

1. What types of things make you feel sad?
2. Mum and Dad can share an experience of a time they felt sad and how they came back to a place of feeling happy.
3. Why is it ok to feel sad?
4. What types of things can make us feel happy again when we are feeling sad?

What’s Happening

Home Learning
The Home Learning Matrix can be found at this link.  If your child is in Years 3 – 8 please look through the matrix and plan out their Home Learning for the term.

Whanau Groups – Friday Afternoons
There are four Whanau Groups (Family Groups) across the school; Kiwi (green), Pukeko (red), Toroa (yellow) & Piwakawaka (blue).  Children are distributed evenly across these groups and would generally remain in the same group for the duration of your stay at RCS. On Friday afternoons, children do their learning activities in this group. This term their learning will be focussed on the further development of the food forest. Please send appropriate footwear and gardening gloves every Friday this term.

RCS 2017 Forms
Your child bought home the following forms: Permission Contact form, a Cyber Contract form and a PCG volunteer form. Could you please fill these out and return them to the office, as soon as you can. It is important that we get updated information yearly, for example: if we need to contact you immediately, then we require your correct contact details.

Late Procedure
If your child arrives later than 9am, please come into the office and see Heather, so we can mark you on the roll.

Wheels Day
We encourage children to bring their wheels (scooters & bikes) on Wednesday to school, however the bike tracks are not quite ready so only scooters please until further notice.

Uniform Sale
New and second hand uniform sales are available in the office during Thursday 8.30am-3.30pm, we encourage you to call and make an appointment first.

We have Lunch Online available on Wednesday from Pita Pit & Fridays from Sydenham Bakery & Subway. Visit their website to create a loggin and order from there. They will deliver your order to your child’s Whanau Group.

Christianity Explored – What’s the Best News You’ve Ever Heard?
Was it surprising? Did it change the way you think? Or was it something you wanted to be true but didn’t dare hope? Christianity Explored is a way of sharing the best news ever heard, and will give you the space and time to think about the big questions of life. It takes place over seven sessions for people who would like to investigate Christianity, or just brush up on the basics. Looking at Mark’s Gospel, it explores the life of the person at the heart of the Christian faith – Jesus Christ. Who He is, why he came, and what it means to follow him. The next course will start on Wednesday the 22nd February, 7.30 – 9pm in our school staffroom. Please see me at school or contact me on 0212254653 to register your interest.  I look forward to hearing from you, Amy Stevens
