Message from Staff

Kia ora whanau,

I hope you all enjoyed the beautiful weather over the weekend and were able to spend some quality time with your families.

I popped into school on Saturday morning, and found Mandy putting up a display that the children from Te Pihinga have been working on.  It was such a pleasure to take a look through it.  The display shows all the projects that have occurred in our school over the past three years that have either been child-led or have a sustainability focus (or both!).  I found it so encouraging to look back over the time and see the many things that have happened – as a school community we really have done a lot!  I would encourage you to take a look at the display, situated on the wall outside of the staff office near Te Pihinga.

This week we have Learning Conferences.  If you have not booked your appointment then I would encourage you to do this straight away.  This start of year Learning Conference is an important opportunity to connect with your child and their teacher to ensure everyone is on the same page with where your child’s learning is heading for the year.  The children are involved in the conferences as they are an important part of the learning partnership, but if there are things you would like to check in with the teacher about without your child present just let the teacher know.  Your input into these conferences is important, as many of the teachers are still getting to know the children that have just recently come to them, so you will have a deeper understanding of the social and emotional areas of growth your child needs to focus on.

I have been reading Seven Habits of Highly Effective People lately.  The seventh habit is to ‘Sharpen the Sword’.  The staff have a great opportunity to do this next week with our combined teacher only day at Middleton Grange.  Please keep the staff in prayers as we attend a day that promises to really inspire, challenge and grow us as Christian educators.

Many blessings,

Liz

Learning Conferences

Have you booked your time slot yet? This is on Tuesday and Wednesday this week. It is important that you take the time to come and meet with your child’s teacher to discuss their learning.  These Learning Conferences are intended to get everyone on the same page with a child’s learning – Child, Teacher and Parents, your input and the child’s input are highly valuable in this process.  Generally we have the children present at the Learning Conference.  If your child’s teacher feels there would be benefit in meeting with you without the child there they will let you know so you can make separate time to meet.  Like-wise if there are specific things you would like to discuss without your child present please contact your child’s teacher. To book please go to www.schoolinterviews.co.nz and use the code bnw3u.

Health Information & Permission Forms
If you haven’t returned your forms please do this asap, this is your last week to have this in. We will be following up with a phonecall next week for those that haven’t returned them. This form provides us with important emergency information and is a good time to update new information that we may not have.

Union Meeting – 20th March
The staff will be attending a Paid Union Meeting on March 20 at 1.30pm.  The purpose of this meeting is to look at the terms for the upcoming contract negotiations. We believe with the current climate in education these negotiations are of utmost importance for the good of our country’s education system, so our staff would like to attend.  If you can pick your children up at 1pm on March 20 that would be a wonderful way to show your support for teachers and the service they provide for the children of New Zealand.  We will have one or two members of staff remain at school for those children who have no way of being collected. Kindly RSVP to the office if you can’t pick your child up, this will allow us to allocate the number of staff on.Selwyn Sports Spectacular- Year 3 & 4 Only
