Message from Staff

Dear Parents,

As you receive this email we will be engaged in a fantastic opportunity for professional development in Christian Education.  It looks to be an interesting and challenging series of topics that will be covered and I am personally looking forward to having this input into my own thinking and development.

As an integrated school all our teaching positions are ‘tagged’, meaning that anyone who teaches in our school needs to be a practicing Christian.  The early schools who negotiated with the Government for this arrangement were very clear about the need for this – we can’t teach children to have a living and active faith if we don’t have one ourselves.  When we choose our staff we look at their faith journey and ask ourselves if they have an active faith, where they are growing in their love for God and their desire to reflect his love and righteousness.  As a school we want our children to know that God is the foundation of all that we learn and do, not just in the Bible story we read or the prayer we say before lunch, but also in how we understand the world around us, our relationship with others and our own place in the world.  Our teachers need wisdom to create an environment that allows for this growth and prayer to model this in a day by day, moment by moment manner.  Please uphold us in your prayers!

Very few teachers however are trained for this type of teaching position, the majority of us are trained at secular institutions then grow on the job into teachers that create these types of Christian environments and learning opportunities.  That is what makes Professional Development like this, with Michael Lindsay, so important. It will spark discussion, make us think and help to develop us as Christian Educators rather than just Christians who educate. We are blessed.

Please uphold us in your prayers that we might have ears and hearts to hear the message that God has for each of us.

Many blessings,

Aydin Gurevin

School Donations
A big thank you to those people who have given a school donation.  We appreciate your willingness to offer support in this way.  The school donations allow us to have extra layers of support in the school such as the Teacher Assistants and Admin Staff.  This makes the teaching and learning experience more effective for your child and the other children in the school.  Thank you!

Partnerships with teaching staff
Thank you for making the effort to come along to the Learning Conferences last week.  As staff we really appreciated and enjoyed the time we were able to spend with you and your child to build a deeper understanding of your child and develop a collective understanding of your child’s needs moving forward through the year.  A reminder that the teaching staff are a phone call, email or conversation away. If you ever have any questions, concerns or areas you would like us to reinforce at school please don’t hesitate to make contact.

Health Information & Permission Forms
Congratulations Mikimiki Kohanga – 1st to have all forms returned. Thank you for returning your forms in to date, for those with unreturned forms you will be contacted soon.

Union Meeting – 20th March
The staff will be attending a Paid Union Meeting on March 20 at 1.30pm.  The purpose of this meeting is to look at the terms for the upcoming contract negotiations. We believe with the current climate in education these negotiations are of utmost importance for the good of our country’s education system, so our staff would like to attend.  If you can pick your children up at 1pm on March 20 that would be a wonderful way to show your support for teachers and the service they provide for the children of New Zealand.  We will have one or two members of staff remain at school for those children who have no way of being collected. Kindly RSVP to the office if you can’t pick your child up, this will allow us to allocate the number of staff on.Selwyn Sports Spectacular – Year 3 & 4 Only
