With spring comes the wonderful sense of new growth, longer and usually warmer days. Our school is growing too. The best thing about my job is getting to meet our new families, firstly through a fairly formal interview and then less formally as we chat at the beginning of the day and after school. I get to engage with the siblings of our students too and that helps build a rapport so that when they begin school it’s not so unfamiliar. Occasionally we get families who have not been to pre school in Rolleston or are new to the area and don’t know anyone else at RCS. I’m always so amazed and proud of the way our little five year olds open their arms and so graciously show HELP and help take charge of our brand new akonga (learners), welcoming them into our fold. Sometimes I have to pinch myself and to think I actually get paid to witness what can only be ‘Love your neighbour’ the way God intended it to be through these beautiful interactions. I also experience this with our parent community, who make connections with our new families before and after school. This first year at school is just as importantly about feeling that we belong in this community as it is about gaining academic success and empowering them with a love of learning.
For some of our families last Thursday’s kapa haka performance may have been a first. For those of you who have seen our performances from the beginning, will no doubt have had a huge sense of joy when you saw the improvement in our school’s performance. We are very grateful to Matua Anton for the way he has coached our school to this level. Matua never has a cross word to say, he oozes enthusiasm and positivity for his culture and language, and that enthusiasm has been infectious for our students. Thank you Matua and tu meke tamariki!
I hope you have a wonderful week and get some time to ponder God’s amazing creation with your children as spring unfolds its new beginnings.

Welcome to RCS
From the BOT
At our recent meeting Mark Larson stood down as Board Chair, in order to create space for our local School Trustee’s to take this leadership role. Mark has served as Board Chair since the establishment Board was formed and we thank him for his wisdom and leadership over this time. Mark will continue as a proprietor representative on the Board. Grant Galloway was then elected as Board Chair. We pray for God’s blessing and wisdom over Grant as he takes on this role.
Gates in Food Forest
There are two new temporary gates in the back paddock where there are neighbouring sheep grazing. If you come through these gates, please make sure you close them, as we do not want the sheep to eat our plants and trees in the Food Forest.
