Message from Staff

Welcome everyone to Rolleston Christian School in 2016. I’m Dennis Marshall the Deputy Principal and also the Senior Hub teacher. We have now been underway for one week. It was a great feeling sitting back and looking at our new student group during our first assembly. I felt that we were becoming a “real” school, as we had double the number from last year and we also had quite a difference in the range of sizes!

This year we have introduced our Senior Hub – the Years 6 and 7 pupils. As mentioned above, I have the priviledge of teaching this group this year, alongside Mr Andrew Miller who will be taking them on Wednesday mornings. It was fascinating watching them form as a group throughout the week. Unlike last year we have an almost even split between boys and girls (8 boys, 7 girls). We also have a reasonable balance between last years pupils and our new pupils this year. This has resulted in the class having to ‘re-establish’ themselves – both new and old. It provides an excellent base for new beginnings.  In the book of Lamentations it says:

The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases;
his mercies never come to an end;
they are new every morning;
great is your faithfulness.
   (Chapter3: v22-23)

Our theme for this term is ‘Love’, and we pray that the children will start each day as a new day and learn to share and accept God’s love for them through our learning and interactions each day at school. I was very excited and proud of the Senior Hub when they came up with our Class Expectations for the year. The first four read:

  1. We can trust each other.

  1. We will put others before ourselves.

  1. We will use good manners and show kindness in and out of school.

  1. We will support each other and keep each other on task.

These values reflect the theme of ‘Love’ and they are the things that we would like to see happen at RCS this year. The list was their own and without prompts. As our role models at the school it looks like we’re in for a great year. I hope you too can sense God’s love at our school when you visit.

God Bless

Exploring the Values at Home

Our focus this week around our value ‘Love-Aroha’ is “Accepting God’s love for you.”. Each week we would like to provide you with a chance to explore the concept of the week as a family at home. This week Mr Pilgrim shared at school devotions, so he has provided some ideas and questions to get you thinking at home about what it means to accept God’s love for you. We pray this exploration will be a precious time for you and your family.

1) Listen to  ‘Come As You Are’ by Crowder on YouTube. Discuss the lyrics as a family.

2) As a family can you find three verses that explain God’s love for us?

3) Read Romans 5: 6-11 together. Discuss what you think this verse means.

4) In your own words what was the main message in Mr Pilgrim’s devotion on Tuesday morning?

5) What can you do to accepts God’s love for you in your life?

What’s Happening

On Tuesday 16th February we will be holding a 2016 Information Meeting for parents. It is very important that all families attend this meeting so we are able to partner positively to enhance your children’s education. In order to make it easier for families we will hold the meeting at two times – 3.30pm and 7.00pm. Both meetings will be exactly the same, but we hope having two time options will mean that everyone is able to come. Please let the office know which meeting you plan to attend.

What’s Coming Up

I’m excited to announce that after the success of our last swim module we will again be having swimming lessons in the last half of this term. We have decided to have lessons in Term One to align with the zone swimming champs and give your year 5-7 athletes the best possible chance of qualifying.

From weeks 7-11 of Term 1 all RCS children will have swimming lessons on Mondays and Wednesdays for 30min at Selwyn Aquatic Centre.

We will walk to Selwyn Aquatic Centre in hubs from 1pm and be back at school by 3pm on Mondays and Wednesdays. Children will get changed at the Centre before their lessons. Please ensure your child has proper swimming togs e.g no underwear while swimming, caps and goggles are encouraged but not compulsory. You are welcome to watch the lessons from week 8 onwards. PLEASE NAME ALL CLOTHING.

Children will be ineligible for lessons if they’ve had diarrhoea or vomiting 24 hours prior to lessons.

The cost of 10 X 30min lessons is $30.00 per child. Please pay using EFTPOS at the office or with internet banking using your child’s surname and ‘swim’ as the reference e.g PILGRIM SWIM.

Thanks for your continued support and cooperation.
