Message from Staff

Kia ora te whanau

A very big thank you to all those that helped make our stall at the Fireworks evening a success.  It is not only good to have the opportunity to fundraise, but it is also great to raise the public awareness of our little school.  I enjoyed the experience, particularly as there is nothing like doing a job together to help build relationships.

In a couple of weeks we have a consultation evening around the Health Curriculum, as we highly value your input into the content that is covered through the curriculum at RCS. Conversations with you about what you hope for your children is such an inspiration to us, so please come along and be part of the discussion!

This consultation will be particularly about what we teach in relation to puberty and sexuality.  When a few of us sat down to plan what it is that we will discuss there were a few questions that came up that we would appreciate your contribution to. Firstly – what does it mean for you to have children that grow up able to have healthy relationships? Therefore, what do our children need to be learning now so they can grow up to have healthy relationships? Thirdly – what are the influences that impact on our children that we need to educate them to think critically about? Lastly – how do we partner together, home and school, to achieve what we want to see for our children?

Please take some time to discuss these question at home with people you trust and respect.  If you are unable to make the meeting then please feel free to email in any thoughts or ideas you have.  We are looking forward to a rich conversation with you.

This week in circle time and assembly we will be exploring ‘what we need when we are hurt’.  I am really loving the Circle Time focus this term on Restorative Skills.  It is amazing to have a conversation with a child when they are able to identify whether they have an inside or an outside hurt and whether the hurt was accidental or intentional.  They are building the skills to identify what has happened and how they are feeling and now we are moving into what we need or can do when we feel like this.  I see this as one aspect of having a great foundation from which to have healthy relationships.  Feel free to come and ask us more about this programme so you are able to reinforce it more at home if you would like.

A reminder to please sign up for the John Parsons evening this week at Clearview.  This is a full cluster event, and the feedback from other schools suggests that John has invaluable information that can help to keep your children safe in the online world.

Many blessings,

Exploring the Values at Home

This term we are exploring Love and Peace.  We are looking at the skills and attitudes needed to restore relationships when they are broken through intentional and unintentional hurts. This week we are looking at what we need when we are hurt.

What did Miss Horn share at assembly about what we need when we are hurt?
What does God want for us when we are hurt?
Do different people in your family need different things when they are hurt?
Discuss ways that people in your family might ask for what they need when they are hurt.

Family challenge of the week:
Each person in your family creates a poster about what they need when they are hurt.

What’s Happening

John Parsons – This week
An email was sent a few weeks ago to book a place at the information evenings for parents – there are sessions on Tuesday and Wednesday, with spaces still available at both. We encourage you to make the most of this opportunity. The children from Year 4 up will also be involved in a session with John, as will the teachers.

Whanau Group Learning – Fridays
During Whanau Group Learning times the children will be doing the practical aspects of the Food Forest.  The groups will take turns being in the forest area, so will only go in every second week.  If you would prefer your children to have gardening clothes on for this activity please send a spare change of clothes in their bags.

Calendars – fundraiser
Rolleston Christian School will be selling artwork calendars/diaries/notebooks/cards as a fundraiser. The children’s artwork will be displayed in the windows outside the main entrance.
Orders to be paid either through Internet banking (Account: 12 1266 0035926 01 Ref: Child’s Name) or by cheque (made out to the school). No cash. Orders to be in by 11th November. These make excellent Christmas presents!

Health and Safety Check

Our safety notice this week with the children is around staying in the designated spaces for playing.  Please reinforce to your children that it is important for them to play round the front of the school so they are in sight of the teachers.

We would greatly appreciate it if you could take the time to fill out a survey related to the strategies we use to build and maintain an effective partnership with you as parents.
