Message from Staff

Kia ora koutou,

I trust you all had an enjoyable weekend with your families and pray that peace resides over your homes in spite of the events of yesterday.

Week 3 of the term finds us exploring how ‘Love is Patient’. When preparing for School Devotions I found myself reflecting on the moment that I realised the way I treated myself was not particularly kind or patient. I wonder for all of us if the way we talk to ourselves does not always reflect love, and in this way doesn’t honour the love that God shows us. As I started to treat myself with more patience and kindness I realised that I actually became kinder and more patient with others. One of Jesus’ most important commandments to us was to ‘love your neighbour as you love yourself’. When I look through the definition of love in 1 Corinthians 13 there are many aspects of love that we need to show ourselves in order to be more genuine in our love for others. I encourage you to reflect over the following weeks, as we explore what God says love is, on the love you are showing yourself. God’s love is not self-seeking, so I am not speaking of a narcissistic type of love, but rather a love that sees you being kind, patient, slowly angered etc with yourself.

We are very much looking forward to connecting with each of you at the Parent Information Evening tomorrow. This is an extremely important part of partnering with us, as a school, in your child’s education, so we ask that you make the time to come. Exploring the Values at Home

Our focus this week around our value ‘Love-Aroha’ is “Being patient with ourselves and others”. Each week we would like to provide you with a chance to explore the concept of the week as a family at home. This week Miss Horn shared at school devotions, so she has provided some ideas and questions to get you thinking at home about what it means to be patient with yourself and others. We pray this exploration will be a precious time for you and your family.

• Talk about a time you have each learnt to do something new, discuss the types of feelings you had while you were still learning.
• Discuss situations you have each noticed you need to be patient with yourself.
• Discuss situations you have each noticed you need to be patient with others.
• Work together to create a list of the ways your family can behave that show you are being patient with yourselves and with others in your family, eg. Take deep breathes when we feel frustrated, say encouraging words to ourselves and others.

If you have been covering reading books for us over the summer please return them as you finish them, so we can start using them in our reading programme. We greatly appreciate the effort that our school families put into helping in this way, so a very big thank you!

What’s Coming Up

Swimming

I’m excited to announce that after the success of our last swim module we will again be having swimming lessons in the last half of this term. We have decided to have lessons in Term One to align with the zone swimming champs and give your year 5-7 athletes the best possible chance of qualifying. 

From weeks 7-11 of Term 1 all RCS children will have swimming lessons on Mondays and Wednesdays for 30min at Selwyn Aquatic Centre. 

We will walk to Selwyn Aquatic Centre in hubs from 1pm and be back at school by 3pm on Mondays and Wednesdays. Children will get changed at the Centre before their lessons. Please ensure your child has proper swimming togs e.g no underwear while swimming, caps and goggles are encouraged but not compulsory. You are welcome to watch the lessons from week 8 onwards. PLEASE NAME ALL CLOTHING. 

Children will be ineligible for lessons if they’ve had diarrhoea or vomiting 24 hours prior to lessons.

The cost of 10 X 30min lessons is $30.00 per child. Please pay using EFTPOS at the office or with internet banking using your child’s surname and “˜swim” as the reference e.g PILGRIM SWIM.

An Incredible Years Parenting course is being held for families in the Rolleston area. This programme is an excellent course and provides extremely beneficial information and tips for parents. We encourage you to look into this by reading clinking for more information.

Get involved with the PCG!

The Parent Community Group is a wonderful way you can serve the school community. Come along to the 2016 Information Evening to find out more about the PCG and then come along to our first meeting for the year at 7.30pm on Tuesday 23 February.

Relay for Life

Mana is organising a team to enter Relay for Life. Check out the information below and get in touch with Mana if you are interested. (Not sure who Mana is?  Ask one of our friendly staff)

• The following titles of reading books are missing from the junior hub. These are early readers and there is one of each title missing.

  Please have a good look at home and return the books asap if you find them.
• Please remember to label all school uniform items.
• All stationery should now be at school.
• A healthy lunch is important – please make sure you are packing a filling and nutritious lunch for your child.
• Hats must be at school.
• Wheels Day is on a Wednesday – children may bring any type of ‘wheels’ they choose.
• For those Year 7s going to Technology on Fridays – please be at school no later than 8.30am.
