Message from Staff

Kia ora kotou,

My name is Amos Pilgrim and I’m the Middle Hub teacher. This term has already been a very busy one, and we already find ourselves in week 4 of 11. This term our focus value is ‘Love-Aroha’, each week we break this huge concept down into more understandable snippets. This week, across the whole school, children will be learning about accepting God’s love for them.

The first thing I like to do is open scripture when starting to learn more about a new topic. Today let’s open our Bibles to 1 Peter 5: 6-7 and read the word.

“Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.” 1 Peter 5:6-7

To me this verse says a lot about God and his unfailing love for us. At the start of the verse we see God as all conquering and mighty.  However, as it continues we see the caring side of Christ who lifts you up, listens to your worries and cares for you.

I think children can teach us adults a lot about acceptance. Children quickly accept the situation they’re in and move on because; A) the situation is usually out of their control, and B) they could be playing! I think that we can learn from children’s mentality. The sooner we accept God’s unconditional love for us the sooner we can share His love with others through deeds, scripture and prayer.

Have a great week everyone and may God bless you.

Exploring the Values at Home

Our focus this week around our value ‘Love-Aroha’ is “Accepting the love that God and others have for us”. Each week we would like to provide you with a chance to explore the concept of the week as a family at home. This week Miss Liggett shared at school devotions, so she has provided some ideas and questions to get you thinking at home about what it means to accept the love that God and others have for us. We pray this exploration will be a precious time for you and your family.

1. In what ways do we show love for each other as a family?
2. How do different people in our family know that they are loved?
3. What do the different people in our family need help with? How can we show love to each other by helping with these things and accepting help?
4. How can we show God and others that we accept and appreciate their love?

What’s Happening

From the Christian Schools Trust ….
Parents will shortly receive their annual account for attendance dues from the proprietor, the Christian Schools Trust. You may ask “Why do we have to pay for our children to attend the school?”. Unlike State schools where the government provides the school property, in State-integrated schools, such as Rolleston Christian School, the land and buildings of the school are privately owned and developed. There is therefore a need to cover ongoing property costs such as rates and insurance, and there is a bank loan that needs to be repaid as well. Your payment of attendance dues is used for these purposes.
In addition the proprietor would love if each family would consider making an additional donation  (which is deductible for tax purposes) which is also used for the same purposes, as the total collected from attendance dues alone is not sufficient to meet all the costs associated with the Property. We understand that some families cannot do this, but we ask all to prayerfully consider this request.

Book covering

If you have been covering reading books for us over the summer please return them as you finish them, so we can start using them in our reading programme. We greatly appreciate the effort that our school families put into helping in this way, so a very big thank you!

What’s Coming Up

I’m excited to announce that after the success of our last swim module we will again be having swimming lessons in the last half of this term. We have decided to have lessons in Term One to align with the zone swimming champs and give your year 5-7 athletes the best possible chance of qualifying.

From weeks 7-11 of Term 1 all RCS children will have swimming lessons on Mondays and Wednesdays for 30min at Selwyn Aquatic Centre.

We will walk to Selwyn Aquatic Centre in hubs from 1pm and be back at school by 3pm on Mondays and Wednesdays. Children will get changed at the Centre before their lessons. Please ensure your child has proper swimming togs e.g no underwear while swimming, caps and goggles are encouraged but not compulsory. You are welcome to watch the lessons from week 8 onwards. PLEASE NAME ALL CLOTHING.

Children will be ineligible for lessons if they’ve had diarrhoea or vomiting 24 hours prior to lessons.

The cost of 10 X 30min lessons is $30.00 per child. Please pay using EFTPOS at the office or with internet banking using your child’s surname and ‘swim’ as the reference e.g PILGRIM SWIM.

Thanks for your continued support and cooperation.
